Q. WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE IN AN ACCIDENT…

LIKE THE BOY SCOUTS SAY “BE PREPARED”

  • Have a disposable camera, notepad and pen ready in your car.
  • Keep the phone number of your insurance company in your glove box or program it into your phone.
  • Download your insurance company’s app to your smart phone. For those of you who own one, smartphones can greatly save you time. Many insurance companies have apps that will allow you to notify your insurance company of an accident and file a claim online.
  • Save your insurance agent’s website to your favorites list on your cell phone.
  • Documents that you should carry: driver’s license, auto insurance cards, auto registration (in your vehicle at all times).

AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT

  • In case of injury or a major collision call 911 immediately, and be prepared to describe the exact location of the accident. Wait for assistance and do not get out of your car if you are on the freeway or a major thoroughfare.
  • In minor accidents, move vehicles to the side of the road out of harm’s way and call the police if you feel that it is necessary.
  • Exchange information including name, address, phone number, driver’s license, insurance company and policy number. Take a picture of their documents with your smartphone, or write them down. Include the scene of the accident, damage to the vehicles involved, traffic signals, stop signs, and crosswalks.
  • If your car is inoperable, have your automobile club or insurance company send a tow truck. You will need to decide where to have your vehicle towed: to your home, your mechanic, or a collision repair center. If you have your car towed to MD Collision Center, we can work with your insurance company to get you back on the road as soon as possible.

Q. DO I NEED TO TAKE MY CAR TO A REPAIR SHOP THAT’S PREFERRED BY MY INSURANCE COMPANY?

Your insurance company may have a list of their preferred auto body repair shops; however, you have the right to have your car repaired at the shop of your choice. Procedures vary among insurance companies; although, many will accept the estimate from the repair center. They will need photos to confirm the necessary repairs, or they will send an adjuster to the body shop for an inspection. In the end, you, the customer, have the choice of where you would like to have your vehicle repaired. MD Collision Center will work with your insurance company to repair your vehicle even if we are not on its list of preferred auto repair body shops.

Q. WILL THE NEW PAINT MATCH THE COLOR OF MY VEHICLE?

Whether your car is new or pre-owned, and if you are in an accident it may be hard to match the color. MD Collision Center uses a state-of-the-art computerized paint mixing system from PPGTM waterborne paints so that our craftsmen can blend the colors to match your car’s existing color. You will be amazed at our artistry as we match your paint color!

Q. WHAT ARE DEDUCTIBLES?

A deductible is the portion of the repair bill that the policy holder will pay. Many insurance companies call this the self-insurance portion.

To manage insurance premiums, policy holders will increase their deductible to lower their premium. Most times the deductible amount is decided upon with the assistance of your insurance agent at the time of purchase or renewal of an insurance policy. For most repairs, the customer will pay the deductible directly to the collision center when the repairs are completed, and the insurance company will send a check for the rest of the repair.

A driver, on average, will be in a car accident every 100,000 miles driven, so weigh your options when you decide on your level of deductible. See or speak with your insurance agent to check for the proper level. Whether you initiate a claim with your insurance company, or you would like to pay for the repair yourself, MD Collision Center will work with you to keep your out of pocket expenses as minimal as possible.
